Migraines are mostly one-sided headaches that cause excruciating pain in one's nerves. This is definitely different from other normal headaches in many ways. We will some ways in detail in this article.
The major difference between migraine headaches and other headaches is that it is one sided. Only in very rare cases, the pain is on both sides of the forehead. Whereas in normal headaches, the pain is usually on both sides of the head. The pain is more severe in case of migraine headaches than in normal headaches. The very fact that one experiences an one-sided pain should strike him that it could be a case of migraine. He should immediately consult a specialist, who will be able to throw more light on this.
Secondly in migraine headaches, one experiences pain in the eyes and in some cases, there are instances of blurred vision. The person will find it very difficult to do normal things like watching television or reading paper. The pain will be so bad, that one cannot even open his eyes. However, in normal headaches, the pain is only on the forehead and in some cases in the neck area. There have been no instances so far in medical history, of a person facing eye pain as well in case of normal headaches.
Thirdly, in migraine headaches, a person is very sensitive to either light or sound. Even a dim light appears to be too bright for him and his eyes will not have the power to face the light directly. Even a slight sound tends to be too jarring or irritating for him. His eyes and ears become very sensitive to sounds around him and he usually prefers a cool, quiet and dark place. There are no such instances in normal headaches. The person who has a normal headache would still be able to do his other physical activities normally.
Fourthly, in migraine headaches, the person suffers from nausea or vomiting. This happens when the pain is severe and he finds it very difficult to perform normal activities like eating and sleeping. The pain is so severe, that he cannot sleep unless he has a medicine for instant relief. He feels sick overall and finds it very uncomfortable to eat because of the persistent vomiting sensation. In normal headaches, only very rarely does a person experience vomiting sensation. It is normally a slight pain around the forehead area, which vanishes after a good sleep or after applying some pain relieving balm.
Fifthly, migraine headaches are more frequent and stay for longer periods of time than normal headaches. Normal headaches only last for a few hours, whereas migraine headaches last from a minimum of 72 hours to a maximum of many weeks. The moment the pain persists for a longer period of time, the patient should be alert enough to check it with a specialist. These are some simple factors of differentiation between a normal headache and a migraine headache. These points prove that migraine headaches definitely require professional help.
