You've just received yet another baby shower invitation, and while you're eager to help your friend celebrate the new addition, the subtraction from your wallet is a real concern. You don't want to appear cheap, but baby gifts are expensive! How do you give a great gift on a budget?
In a word: basket!
Baskets make great gifts because they allow you to create a stellar presentation while spending less than you might on a typical shower gift. All it takes is a little creativity. Here are a few simple tips:
1. Choose a Theme. Your theme might be bathtime, bedtime, playtime, or something more abstract and creative. Your theme will guide the look and feel of your basket, so choose something fun!
2. Purchase an Anchor Gift. If your budget is tight, this gift will be your one splurge. Choose an item that will be the major gift in your basket, something eye catching. For example, if you are doing a bathtime theme, this item could be a monogrammed bath towel or colorful hooded towel. Not only will this item be the largest in your basket, it will be the focal point. The colors you choose for the rest of the gift should coordinate with this item.
3. Select the Right Basket. Baskets can get expensive, so the key to selecting the right basket is to think outside the box. If you've nearly spent your budget on other items, find a colorful plastic basket at a dollar store. They often have many colors to choose from--for just a dollar! At that price, you might be able to include a few more goodies in your basket. On the other hand, you might want your "basket" to be the focal point of your gift. A baby tub is the perfect container for a bathtime theme. A small tote or mini diaper bag also makes an excellent basket. What about a flower pot for a green theme (eco-friendly baby items) or a pail and shovel for a summer theme (baby-safe sunscreen, small pack of swim diapers, sun hat, etc.)
4. Fill in the Gaps. Once you've selected a good anchor gift/focal point and an appropriate basket, use the remainder of your budget to fill the basket with related items. For a bathtime theme, you might include baby wash, lotion, a pack of washcloths, a bath toy, a water thermometer, etc. Be creative with items that will fit with your theme and match the colors you've selected. The more coordinated the colors, the more expensive your basket looks--no one has to know you're on a budget but you!
5. Add the Finishing Touches. If you don't complete this last step, your basket will simply look like an assortment of things in a container. Finish your basket off with curled ribbon and a small card. If your basket has a wide mouth, you may want to place it in a clear plastic gift bag (available at dollar stores and flower shops) before adding ribbon.
