Have any women out there ever thought about driving a van for a living? Well, you wouldn't be alone. There's a new kind of van driver exploding onto the scene, and it's in the form of a woman.
The percentage of women running businesses which require vans to transport and deliver goods has grown enormously in recent years. It seems that girl power is taking over the trucking world, a field ,up until now, that has most commonly been associated with the beer drinking, alpha male. According to a recent van study, which surveyed two hundred van drivers, it was discovered that over a third of these were women. Another statistic further reveals that of this new female breed of driver, 53% are self employed, whereas only 44% of male van drivers are self employed. You could interpret this fact as a sign that women are taking control via the aid of vans, and furthering their careers independently from male dominated businesses.
Though you are still not likely to see a team of women advertising their removals business- however competent women drivers may be, the general male physique is still better suited for the heavy lifting that may be required in a removals job- there are many other industries open to women, that require truck driving. Female florists, for instance are using these vehicles more and more in order to transport their produce in bulk and in the most efficient way. Van manufacturers are also getting in on the act, tailoring interiors of large vehicles so that they appeal to both men and women. With power assisted steering and sat nav, driving LGVs is certainly less physical than it used to be. Other interior accessories such as multiple cup holders and storage space, adjustable seatbelts and air conditioning, are also making the business of driving a van much less male orientated, and far more appealing to both genders. Power to the ladies, I say!
