Shot blasting employs the propulsion or blasting of small steel shots or balls of uniform size on a surface at high velocity. This technique removes any surface contaminants, pollutants and other coatings from surfaces like concrete and steel. The surface, free from all surface contaminants and blemishes, provides an ideal mechanical profile for bonding with other coatings and treatments.


Shot blasting is preferred in many instances as it provides a chemical free and dry surface after the treatment. In contrast to sandblasting, this technique of abrasive blasting does not generate large quantities of dust that is harmful for operators if accidentally ingested or inhaled. Dust from sandblasting is harmful to health if proper protection and safeguards are not employed during the operation.


The method is fast and offers minimum disruption to other activities. Concrete being a porous surface is prone to retention of chemicals, oils and other contaminants that penetrate through the surface. This technique is excellent for cleaning long stretches of concrete for motor ways, airport tarmacs, steel decks of ships and shipyards and other surfaces.


Many manufacturers of coatings specify that surfaces should be prepped by shot blasting technique to provide an ideal surface for bonding or application of paint. The method works equally well on concrete and on steel. The method is eco-friendly and does not use harsh chemicals. The surface is dry and ready for immediate use or further treatment. Shot blasting can also be achieved with non-metallic materials like silicon carbide or aluminium oxide. Aluminium oxide provides a high quality finish with minimal damage or impact to the environment.
