There is nothing worse than tangled jewelry, particularly if your collection includes lots of fine chains. For collections that have grown beyond what a standard jewelry box can contain, getting creative with storage can add a new element to your décor and help prevent against lost and damaged pieces. Think of sexy boudoirs and ladies rooms dripping with jewels and mirrors, and use that vision to create a rich display for your accessories.
The easiest way to store hook earrings is to hang them from an assortment of vases and glasses. This is a perfect way to get some use out of wine glasses that have lost the rest of their set, and a few colorful or decorative vases can be easily found at thrift stores and yard sales. Choose glass pieces with an assortment of heights and shapes, then simply hang earring around the rims. Watch out for top-heavy glasses that will tip over easily if bumped and add weight to the bases of bud vases with some fish-bowl stones, or use the space to store earring studs.
If surface space is an issue, buy a spool of thin beading wire or fishing line and a bag of cheap crimp beads. Using a pair of pliers, pinch flat the crimp beads at intervals along the wire. The wire can then be strung across a window or between wall hooks, and earrings can be hung with the crimp beads acting as stoppers to keep pairs apart.
When fine chains are tangled and untangled multiple times, stresses in the metal can eventually lead to breaks and fractures. For necklaces and bracelets, some branches with plenty of natural forks can be added to tall vases. Use each branch in the fork as a place to hang a piece of jewelry from, and again add decorative stones to the vases to keep them steady. This will keep the chains nicely separated from one another and free from tangles.
If you need even more space, an old, painted ladder can make an adorable focus point for a room, and necklaces, cuffs and bracelets can be latched to each rung. Add some color by tying a bright scarf to an upper rung. That will give the ladder a structured element and fight visual clutter. Store it in a closet if you do not want it on display; just be sure to add it to a closet free from clothes that may get caught in wires and clasps as they brush past.
Beautiful jewelry is too good to confine to boxes, and can accessorize a home in a very feminine way. With limited investment, and lots of creativity jewelry can remain tangle free.
