If Genghis Khan was alive today how would he fair in the internet marketing world? After reading that he conquered more lands in 25 years than the Romans did in 400 I decided to do a little more research and see what I could learn and apply to my field of internet marketing from a man who was obviously very successful in his. I believe I have come up with a number of internet marketing ideas which will help me in my business.
When most of us start out in the internet marketing game we do not have much technical knowledge to use to our advantage. Well neither did the Mongols, they were well skilled in hunting but did not have any advance weaponry or have any innovative warfare techniques to start with. What they were very successful at is taking weapons or innovations from conquered civilisations, applying them to their own techniques and conquering the next civilisation and cycle continued.
This shows that you do not need to know everything to begin with. Take action, start a project and then take what you learn from it and apply it to the next one. Over time you will have built an armory of technical knowledge to conquer any project you want.
Genghis Khan had a small list (army) but he did not let the size of his small list bother him. His list often outperformed other lists because they were very loyal. I know I would rather have a smaller list of loyal subscribers who would buy from me than a large 'cold' list, and this is what Genghis Khan had. How do you get this loyal list? Well you have to offer something, something of value. He shared his plunder, what will you share? You should share quality content and not endless promotional materials. By doing this, you like his list (army) should appeal and grow over time.
How effectively do you create a buzz for a new product launch or project? Genghis Khan was a master at propaganda so much so that the outcome of his launch (campaign) could be virtually guaranteed beforehand. He often sent refugees from the city he had just conquered to the next so that by the time his army had arrived there was so much terror from the rumours that the city was ready to submit before the fighting began. You want your potential customers to be so excited about your coming launch that they will be almost fighting to get their hands on your product.
Are you opportunistic or do you have a strategic plan for the long term? Are you willing to put the work in up front to gain in the long run? Once, when Genghis Khan wanted to take a major city, he divided his army into two, marched part of it 2,000 miles across the desert around and behind the city so they would not be detected and assembled at the rear of the city to cut off any deserters. Most leaders would not have gone to the effort but it paid off and the fate of the city was the same as most others that Mongols focuses on.
You probably would not want Genghis Khan as a joint venture partner. Joint venture partnerships should be primarily about the relationship of the partners not just about the financial rewards. Genghis would protect you but only if you submitted to him and offered a tribute. If you did not submit then, well, he took what he wanted. I would not recommend this approach to your joint ventures.
Are you surrounded by a great team? Genghis Khan could pick talent. He surrounded himself with the best talent from his growing empire. He broke tradition of hiring family in favour of hiring on merit. You should surround yourself with talented people. You do not need to hire them, just work with them or outsource. You do not need to, and should try not to get caught up with doing everything yourself.
Do you have the staying power? Are you motivated to start new projects? Time after time Genghis Khan started new conquests until his empire stretched approximately 4000 miles. How do you feel about starting something new or different? If you are motivated and willing to venture into unknown lands, willing to make mistakes trying new internet marketing ideas, take a few loses then your internet empire should soon start to expand exponentially.
There is no doubt that Genghis Khan was superior in the art of warfare. There are many attri
