That's right I am asking you to sell yourself, what you do and what I might want to purchase etc from you .. RIGHT NOW........did you pause? Did you looked puzzled? Or like myself when I was asked years ago I genuinely did not know.
At this point right now it's ok to not know but if you want to be a successful product you will need to decide and know so you can move forward. For me it felt like I was making that dreaded decision you make at school when you have to make your subject and work experience choices with the main aim of getting you to think about or for some decide on what job you wanted to do when you grow up.
To be honest that decision petrified me and sometimes decisions I have to make now still strike that fear, in case it's the wrong choice but at some point you have to make one! For years I have been a jack of all trades and sometimes a master of none. My reasons I wanted to make myself appealing to book, teach classes that were in demand that others could not teach which in turn brought and brings the £s. Studios are so varied with their demands sometimes on a monthly basis you need to be able to teach anything or adapt for anything if you want to be on the next timetable.
When I had to sit down and think about my U.S.P is was hard because I saw myself as a freelance instructor which is great and I love that part of my job but I realised there are a lot of us out there so what makes me stand out from the rest?! Ask yourself what makes you stand out from the rest? OR it could be crunch time where you realise you might want to change your focus remember the fitness and leisure industry is a big place.
A little story .........
At present I am managing a club and working with a growing team of personal trainers. Some of my trainers have endless amounts of confidence and their U.S.P screamed out without me even having to ask. So when I first arrived and I had had a little time to assess my team I set myself the task or sitting down with the PTs that seemed to be lost behind the gyms very loud U.S.Ps. I discovered that as well as low confidence which can happen in any enviroment that can contain very strong personalities and U.S.Ps the trainers didn't know their USP?!? They just saw themselves as PTs nothing more nothing less and they all said the same things 'I assist with weight management and toning' etc. Amazingly when I sat down with my team I realised one specialised in Rehab and the other in marathon training and outdoor training! My job to promote my team became 1000 times easier. Over the weeks we have reviewed their marketing and services they offer and now they have a quickly growing client base.
So to get you started here are a few questions to help you see where you are
What motivates you?
What inspires you and that you love talking about?
What are your strengths?
What are your weaknesses and what do you need to make them stronger?
Who is your Mr or Mrs/Miss Motivator?
Where do you REALLY see yourself in 3 years?
There is so much more we can cover, but right now if you are about to start out you need to ask yourself these things and if you are already out there working for yourself you need to asses and ask yourself 'what cha got?' and is it your USP?
