When we talk about baby showers, we think of gifts and well wishes for the mom-to-be. What most people don't know is that there's an underlying tradition that's behind a baby shower. Originally, a shower is a party thrown by a female relative of the would-be mom with the intention of requesting gifts from friends of the family. The main purpose of the event is to help the would-be mom raise cash for her newborn's needs and to solicit support from well-meaning friends who can contribute anything to her cause. A baby shower is a way for friends to show their support and express their excitement at the blessing that's coming in a few months.
Nowadays, a baby shower has become a basic part of a woman's pregnancy and the purpose of the party has evolved. It's still a way to raise funds for the imminent birth, but it has also become a celebration of womanhood. Friends and relatives can come over to share in the mom-to-be's happiness, whether or not they bring baby shower gifts.
The excited parents need not wait for a relative to throw the party for them. They can simply arrange to have a party planner around to help them plan, organize and pan out the details of the party. The family can also hire caterers to take care of the food, so they can become guests or VIPs in their own party. They can also order baby shower favors so that each guest will have something to bring home when the party ends. Inside the baskets, the would-be dad can insert small 'thank you' notes and memorabilia as tokens of appreciation for the well-wishes and the gifts that the guests brought with them to the party.
Speaking of gifts, how should a new mom handle the task of assigning gifts to the people she will invite to the party? It has become an ordinary practice to request specific gifts from guests because it's more practical than hoping to receive a wide variety of new baby gifts from your friends, only to receive triplicates of the same baby merchandise (usually in the same color!). The mom can slip a small note inside the invitation requesting for a particular item, like nappies, feeding bottles, clothes or accessories. If you've been invited to attend a baby shower, the quickest solution to the gift issue is to prepare baby gift baskets filled with a variety of items that the newborn can use.
The most important thing to do when planning a baby shower is to inform the guests of the most probable gender of the baby. This is to help the guests pick out the best gifts to bring. This information will also help the party planner decorate the venue. The couple can refer to the results of the latest pre-natal ultrasound scan to obtain this information.
However, here's a word of caution. Sometimes, pre-natal diagnostic scans can be wrong so it's best to stick with 'gender neutral' colors like yellow, green and red when thinking of a motif for a baby shower. If a would-be mom chooses pink or blue and it turns out that the ultrasound scan results were wrong, a baby boy might end up with pink booties and Barbie dolls, while a baby girl might end up with blue clothes and Transformer collectibles.
