Strapping is the process of bundling together several different items in order to create a stronger, more robust structure. Securing multiple objects into one integrated whole serves a host of purposes. Mostly, it makes the object easier to transport and store. It also lends structural stability to items left in precarious and otherwise rickety positions.
Throughout history, humanity has experimented with a plethora of different materials in an effort to find the best and most versatile strap to use.
Nylon
Nylons specific strength, greatest out of all the plastics, makes it an excellent choice for strapping material. Its strength to weight ratio exceeds even that of polypropylene and polyester. Unfortunately, nylons relatively high cost keeps it from being as popular as it could be. Only specific settings and industries that submit straps to frequent temperature changes still prefer to use nylon since its resists creep and expansion much better than other plastic variants.
Woven Strapping
Woven or corded strapping doesnt really refer to a particular substance or material. It instead describes the process that lends strength to the strap. It is most commonly made of rayon but other materials have been utilized plenty of times in the past as well. Since it uses a metal buckle for a joint, it enjoys greater overall system strength when compared to equivalent steel strapping. Corded straps also have relatively high stretch and elongation characteristics which makes it ideal for use in ships and boats where rough waters can move cargo around quite a bit. Being soft and flexible also means it wont damage anything delicate that its tied against.
Steel
Steel is one of the oldest industrial strapping materials man has ever used, and its still in heavy circulation today. Steel has the highest tensile strength out of all possible strap variants. Heavy-duty settings, where loads are extremely heavy, are where this kind of strap excels. The materials specific strength can be customized and adjusted by varying the quality and grade of metal being used. Low, practically non-existent, stretch is one of the hallmarks of steel strapping.
Composite
Composite strapping is also called a synthetic steel strap by industry experts. Its manufactured using an innovative process that embeds tiny filaments into the materials substructure. Its highly resistant to both abrasions and climate changes. With force ratios better than any other type, joint efficiency is its greatest asset.
