There are numerous types of tropical fish and we must admit that they never fail to amaze us with their vibrant colors and their varied characteristics. Generally, these fish are found in tropical environments around the globe and they include both freshwater and saltwater species. However, hobbyists often use the term tropical fish to point to freshwater fish. They usually use marine fish to refer to saltwater tropical fish.

One of the most beautiful saltwater tropical fish is the Butterfly fish. They are harder to keep and maintain though because they require a specialized diet. Some feed on corals so unless you are willing to spend money on live corals for food, this fish is not for you. They can be distinguished with their oval-shaped body that is thin laterally. This shape allows them to easily move between rocks on a coral reef and find food in the nooks. Most Butterfly fish feed on algae, sponges and corals. Some are omnivorous and they feed on planktonic animals. It may be easier to acclimate a young fish into the aquarium and it should be fed several times a day. Most Butterfly fish can eat a large variety of food like live brine, flakes and frozen foods. Another favorite among hobbyists is the Angelfish because they are easier to keep compared to other species. This fish originated from the Amazon region of South America. Angelfish can be fed with flakes alone but it will be better to add variety into their diet. Feed them with live food such as adult brine shrimp, black worms, mosquito larvae, finely chopped earthworms and guppy fry.

Other popular types of tropical fish include Bristlenose and Cardinal Tetra. The Bristlenose fish is a very peaceful fish and it is quite sociable. It's nice to have them in the tank because they love to eat algae. Their diet mainly consists of algae, algae wafers, zucchini slices, romaine lettuce and spinach. The Cardinal Tetra belongs to the Characin family and it is characterized by its iridescent blue line. This fish is very popular among aquarists however it is more difficult to breed in captivity. What's good about them though is that they do not require a large aquarium. They do pretty good in smaller tanks.

If you like colorful types of tropical fish then the rainbow fish is for you. Rainbow fish is a family of small freshwater fish that originated from Australia and New Guinea Islands. What I like about rainbow fish is that they do not uproot the plants in the fish tank. They are very peaceful and you shouldn't have a problem in keeping them together with other non-aggressive species.
