In the early part of 2009, the world was struck with another pandemic that killed 18,450 people worldwide. Predominantly mistaken as h3n2 Influenza virus, world health organizations heightened alert status against the Influenza A (h1n1) virus upon breaking in continental boarders in less than two months.
Distinct from other flu viruses, the Influenza A (h1n1) virus originated from Mexico in March 2009. Two babies were reported to have acquired the first strain of the virus. Eventually, 60% of the entire population of La Gloria, Veracruz was infected with the disease. The virus was new so doctors could not give necessary vaccines and medications to combat the flu other than ordinary flu medicines. Because of this, the virus spread to other regions in the American continent.
A month after the outbreak in Mexico and the USA, the disease was detected as a novel form of Influenza virus. It was formerly called Swine virus. Nevertheless, because of its negative effect on the pork industry, its name was changed to Influenza A (h1n1) virus. Others call it the Mexican flu, owing to the origin of the virus.
Epidemiologists say that Influenza A (h1n1) virus is a triple reassortment type of disease. It is a combination of three flu viral strains that typically affect pigs, birds and humans. Swine flu genes combined with both avian flu and human flu viral strains, giving birth to the Influenza A (h1n1) virus. Because of its sudden attack, the world was caught unprepared with Medicare supplement and medications to fight against the novel disease.
Nevertheless, medical breakthroughs to curtail flu pandemics in the past decades contributed to the deterrence of the A (h1n1) virus. The h5n1 Avian and Spanish flu pandemic in the 20th century armed medical practitioners with knowledge on how to plot, examine, and create necessary vaccines against the novel flu. Because of this, Medicare supplement and other necessary medications were developed in less than six months after the outbreak.
In November 2009, over 65 million vaccine doses against the novel flu have been administered to people in different parts of the world. Ordinary commoners have become extra vigilant in treating and detecting Influenza A (h1n1). The medical world still fears for a possible mutation of the virus that could be more virulent than the present strain. Recently, Medicare supplement insurance plan already include protection against disease of similar kind.
