Women are more prone to migraine headaches than men since they experience hormonal changes more frequently. Two hormones are especially involved in menstruation; estrogen and progesterone. Among these two, estrogen is said to have more effect on migraine. A high level may soothe headache while a low level may make the headache worse.
Food is a large factor when it comes to migraine headaches. Cheese, chocolate, caffeine and processed foods are some of the types of food that can trigger one. But since not all people experience the same effect from a certain type of food, it would be safe to say that this subject needs further investigation.
Alcohol can either be a treatment or a trigger for a migraine. When alcohol metabolizes in the body it turns into ethanol. Ethanol is a vasodilator, which means it helps widen the blood vessel. This may be a good thing for some people but for others the effect can result to a migraine headache.
The environment can be a trigger for migraine for many reasons. Changes weather or even temperature can cause a person to have a migraine. Chemicals and toxins like formaldehyde and carbon monoxide are also trigger for certain types of headaches. Formaldehyde is present in cigarette smoke while carbon monoxide can be acquired through vehicle smoke.
It's a normal thing to experience headaches but that doesn't mean that you should ignore it when it happens. Treat migraine headaches immediately because they might be linked to medical conditions that are more serious. Prevent attacks by staying away from the possible triggers. Most of all practice a lifestyle that is healthy.
