There are a bunch of people out there who will tell you how to nail an interview, or claim to have the top 10 tips that will lead to interview success. I have interviewed many candidates for various positions and in this article will just give you one tip, yes just one, which I can almost guarantee will increase your chances in an interview. If some of the applicants I have interviewed had following this golden rule, then many more of them would have got the job.
The tip itself is simple, but extremely effective in showing that you have both the knowledge and experience to carry out the requirements of the job. It will give your interviewer belief in not only your technical and business skills, but also improve their estimation of your confidence and professionalism.
So, the key is....give real life examples. Yes, simple as that. When you answer a question, give a real world example from your career or life to date to illustrate and reinforce your point. So if the interviewer asks "Are you a team player?", don't just say yes, follow this up with more information and an example of how this relates to something which has happened to you previously.
So, for example you could say: "I am definitely a team player. Last year when we pursued several large new prospective customers, my department had to work much more closely than usual with other departments to ensure that we got these new business wins. This meant quickly gelling within a new group of colleagues and working effectively on a tight timescale, which we achieved as all of the prospects which we were targeting became customers, netting over $ 750,000 in new sales for the company."
You can see how an answer like this gives the interviewer much more reason to consider you a viable candidate than someone who just affirms that they work well in a team, which tells the interviewer nothing. If you bear this in mind whenever you are in an interview situation - or in fact any situation where you are trying to convince someone of something - then you will soon find yourself to be very successful in these situations.
